Film: Chromolume #5 (2023)

Following a postgraduate degree in performance design at the Royal Central School in London, Stuart was awarded a design scholarship to the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre. This early career underpins his inclinations and enduring preoccupation with occupied space.

Before his projects at Southampton Arches Studios (2021-2024), Stuart worked as a teacher, education leader and latterly a headteacher in Southampton. He is currently completing an MA in Contemporary Curating at Winchester School of Art and TURPS MASS (sculpture) Correspondence Programme.

Using hand-built models and installations, Stuart’s practice studies what happens when special effects disrupt built environments. In the context of a resurgence of traditional model-making methods in international film and TV production, he applies his background in design to create works that merge rudimentary analogue and digital techniques. He regards these experiments and their resulting apparatus not as a medium of sculpture, but as forms of problems to be resisted, dodged, or performed awkwardly, much like persona.

Stuart exhibits under the name Will Woods.
